Welcome to ISFHWE

The International Society of Family History Writers and Editors

ISFHWE’s primary goal is to encourage excellence in writing and editorial standards in genealogical publishing. This embraces all media, including newspapers, magazines, newsletters, professional journals, books (including compiled family histories), online columns, society and personal Web sites, Web logs (blogs), and broadcast journalism of all sorts.

Welcome to our new website! There are a few issues with members’ profiles, which we are aware of and working to resolve. Thank you for your patience while we work on this.

Membership has its benefits!

The International Society of Family History Writers and Editors is open to anyone involved in genealogy columns and articles or writing about family history. This includes present and potential columnists, writers, and editors, as well as publishers, broadcasters, and webmasters for genealogical and historical societies.

One copy of the RootsMagic software is provided to ISFHWE members attending the major conferences where RootsMagic has exhibit space (one time only). RootsMagic will be provided a copy of the current membership list and new members will be given a certificate to present. Thank you, RootsMagic!

Members receive Columns (the quarterly newsletter), access to the members only website, and have an opportunity to actively participate in one or more of ISFHWE’s activities: the Annual Excellence-in-Writing Competition, Member Publication Promotion Project, our ISFHWE Mailing List, listings on the public website, and special promotions for ISFHWE members offered by partner vendors.

Columns, the ISFHWE quarterly newsletter, offers information about genealogical events, tips for improving your writing skills, column ideas, and product reviews. It provides an open forum for members to discuss issues of mutual interest. It features articles by journalists, columnists, editors, and other writers, with many useful tips and ideas. Members are encouraged to submit material for inclusion in the newsletter. Institutions, societies and agencies are invited to subscribe to the newsletter. The quarterly issue is provided to all members and subscribers. Columns is now available in Portable Document Format (.pdf).
